How much louder will +6 dB make it?

+6 dB doubles the signal level. Most people hear about +10 dB as twice as loud. Start at +6 dB and go higher if it is still too quiet.

What does Prevent clipping do?

Boosting a loud part past the maximum level cuts off the tops of the waveform, which sounds like crackling. With Prevent clipping on, those peaks are rounded off smoothly instead, so you can boost further before it distorts.

Why does it sound squashed at +20 dB?

Music that is already loud has nowhere to go, so the limiter has to hold down most of the peaks. For a louder file without that squashed sound, try Normalize Audio, which raises the whole file evenly until the loudest peak reaches a target.
