AAC vs M4A
AAC is the codec and M4A is a file format that holds it. A .aac file is the audio stream on its own, which is simple and widely readable but has no room for tags or cover art. A .m4a file wraps the same audio in an MPEG-4 container, which adds tags, artwork and accurate seeking.
Choose AAC when a tool or device specifically asks for .aac. For a music library, choose M4A from the output menu instead.
