How do I change the key of a song?

Each semitone is one step on a piano, including the black keys. To move a song from C to D, shift it up 2 semitones. To move it from C down to A, shift it down 3.

No. The song keeps its tempo and length; only the pitch moves. To change speed and pitch together, use the Audio Speed Changer with Keep the pitch off.

Why do voices sound odd after a big shift?

Shifting moves the character of a voice along with its pitch, so a voice raised many semitones sounds smaller and a voice lowered sounds bigger. Small shifts of 1 to 3 semitones sound the most natural.

Can I lower a song to make it easier to sing?

Yes. Shift it down 1 to 3 semitones for a lower key. For an instrument tuned down a half step, shift the song down 1 semitone to play along.
