Question 1

What is an AIFF file?

Accepted Answer

AIFF is Apple's uncompressed audio format, the Mac counterpart to WAV. GarageBand, Logic Pro, older iTunes CD imports and many sample packs use it. Files end in .aif or .aiff and take about 10 MB per minute at CD quality.

Question 2

How much smaller will the MP3 be?

Accepted Answer

Roughly 4 to 11 times smaller, depending on the bitrate. A 50 MB AIFF song becomes about 11 MB at 320 kbps or about 7 MB at 192 kbps.

Question 3

Can I convert AIFF to MP3 in the Music app instead?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In Music, open Settings, then Files, then Import Settings, set Import Using to MP3 Encoder, select the songs and choose File, Convert, Create MP3 Version. This page skips the settings change and works on files that aren't in your library.

Question 4

Can I open AIFF files on Windows?

Accepted Answer

Many Windows apps don't play AIFF, which is a common reason to convert. This page works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows, so you can turn AIFF files from a Mac into MP3s without installing anything.

Question 5

Does it work with 24-bit AIFF from Logic or Pro Tools?

Accepted Answer

Yes. 16-bit and 24-bit AIFF files are read at any common sample rate. Recordings above 48 kHz are resampled for the MP3, because MP3 can't store higher rates.

Question 6

Are my AIFF files uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The AIFF is decoded and the MP3 is encoded in your browser, so unreleased mixes and recordings stay on your computer.
