How long should a fade out be?

Songs that fade out usually take 5 to 10 seconds. For a podcast intro or a clip that just needs a clean ending, 1 to 3 seconds is enough. The defaults here are a 3 second fade in and a 5 second fade out.

Can I add only a fade out?

Yes. Set Fade in to 0 seconds and only the end fades. Set Fade out to 0 for a fade in only.

A linear fade: the volume changes by the same amount every moment, from silence to full level at the start and back down at the end.
