Mic Test

Check that your microphone works before a call, a stream or a recording. Watch the level meter move, hear yourself through headphones, and record a short clip to play back.

Record a test clip (up to 10 s)

Start the test first, then record a few words and play them back.

How it works

  1. 1Press Start and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. 2Speak and watch the meter and waveform respond.
  3. 3Record a 10 second clip and play it back to hear how you sound.

What the mic test shows you

The level meter shows how strong the signal from your microphone is, from silence at the left to the loudest the input can take at the right. The waveform below it scrolls over the last few seconds, so you can see each word as a bump. If the meter moves when you talk and falls back when you stop, your microphone is working and your browser can hear it.

Hear yourself plays the mic straight back to you. Use it with headphones to judge background noise, hum or a rustling cable. The test clip is the most honest check: it is exactly what a video call or recording app gets, including the noise suppression your browser applies.

Fixing a microphone that doesn't work

Most problems are permissions or the wrong device. If the list shows several inputs, try each one: laptops often list the built-in mic, a webcam mic and a headset mic, and the default isn't always the one you're speaking into. If no device names appear, the browser hasn't been granted access yet.

On Windows, open Settings, System, Sound, and check the input device and its volume. On macOS, open System Settings, Sound, Input. If the mic works here but not in another app, the problem is that app's own settings, not your hardware.

Private by design

Everything happens on your device. The audio is never uploaded, and the test clip disappears when you leave the page.
