Audio codecs inside MKV files
MKV is a container, and the audio inside can be almost anything. Browsers decode AAC, Opus, Vorbis, FLAC, MP3 and PCM, so those convert to MP3 here. Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), DTS and TrueHD are licensed codecs that browsers don't include, and files that use them will fail.
To see which codec your file uses, open it in VLC and choose Tools, then Codec Information (on a Mac, Window, then Media Information). If the audio is listed as A52 or DTS, it can't be converted here.
