Question 1

Is the WAV lossless?

Accepted Answer

The WAV is an uncompressed copy of the decoded audio, so no new loss is added. The audio in most MP4s is AAC, which was compressed when the video was made, so the WAV can't sound better than that source.

Question 2

Why use WAV instead of MP3 for a video's audio?

Accepted Answer

Editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Audacity and Reaper work with WAV without decoding it, and you avoid a second round of lossy compression before you edit, mix or master the sound.

Question 3

Why is the WAV bigger than I expected?

Accepted Answer

Videos compress their sound, usually to around 128 to 256 kbps AAC. WAV stores it uncompressed at about 1,400 to 1,500 kbps, or roughly 10.6 to 11.5 MB per minute, so an hour of audio comes to around 650 to 700 MB. The free download limit is based on the MP4 you drop in, which can be up to 100 MB.

Question 4

What sample rate will the WAV have?

Accepted Answer

Normally the same as the video's audio: 48 kHz for most phone and camera footage, 44.1 kHz for some downloads. The WAV is 16-bit PCM in either case.

Question 5

Is the video uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The MP4 is opened and converted in your browser, and only you can see it.
