Question 1

Why convert M4A to WAV?

Accepted Answer

Many transcription services, speech-to-text tools, older audio editors and hardware samplers want uncompressed WAV. Converting gives you a file they all accept, without changing how it sounds.

Question 2

Does the WAV sound better than the M4A?

Accepted Answer

It sounds the same. The AAC audio in the M4A is decoded to plain PCM samples, so nothing more is lost, but nothing the original compression removed comes back either.

Question 3

How large will the WAV be?

Accepted Answer

About 10.6 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo and 11.5 MB per minute at 48 kHz. Voice memos are often mono, which halves that, so a 30-minute mono interview at 48 kHz comes to about 170 MB.

Question 4

What sample rate and bit depth is the WAV?

Accepted Answer

16-bit PCM, normally at the same sample rate as the M4A, which is usually 44.1 or 48 kHz. Mono files stay mono and stereo files stay stereo.

Question 5

Does the 100 MB free limit apply to the WAV?

Accepted Answer

No. The limit is based on the M4A you drop in, not the WAV you get. A 20 MB voice memo that becomes a 170 MB WAV still downloads free.

Question 6

Are voice memos uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. The conversion happens in your browser, so interviews, lectures and personal recordings stay private.
