Question 1

Why won't my OGG file play?

Accepted Answer

Some players don't support OGG, including Apple's Music app, QuickTime Player, many car stereos and older versions of Windows Media Player. Converting to MP3 fixes that, since MP3 plays almost everywhere.

Question 2

Does it handle both Vorbis and Opus?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ogg files with Vorbis or Opus audio both convert, and so do files with the .oga and .opus extensions.

Question 3

Which MP3 bitrate should I choose for an OGG?

Accepted Answer

Vorbis and Opus pack sound more tightly than MP3, so pick a somewhat higher MP3 bitrate than the OGG's to keep the quality. Ogg music is often around 128 to 192 kbps, which makes a 192 or 256 kbps MP3 a safe choice.

Question 4

Will the MP3 be bigger than the OGG?

Accepted Answer

Usually a little, because you need a higher MP3 bitrate to match the sound. An MP3 takes about 1.4 MB per minute at 192 kbps and about 1.9 MB per minute at 256 kbps.

Question 5

Where do OGG files come from?

Accepted Answer

OGG is common in games, Linux apps, recordings on Wikimedia Commons and voice message apps, because the format is open and royalty-free.

Question 6

Are the files uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The OGG is decoded and the MP3 is encoded in your browser, so the audio never leaves your device.
