How it works

  1. 1Drop an audio file, or several to bring them all to the same peak.
  2. 2Set the target peak. -1 dBFS leaves a little headroom and suits most uses.
  3. 3Press Normalize, listen and download the normalized file.

What normalization does and doesn't do

Peak normalization is a single volume change for the whole file. The tool looks for the one sample that is furthest from silence and works out how far it is from the target, for example 7 dB below -1 dBFS. Then it raises everything by those 7 dB. Nothing is compressed or limited, so the dynamics of the recording are untouched.

That makes it the right fix for a recording that came out quiet, or for a set of clips that should all peak at the same level. It won't make a quiet passage louder compared to a loud one, and it won't match how loud two different songs sound. Streaming services do that with loudness normalization (LUFS), which measures average loudness over time instead of the single highest peak.
