Question 1

How does it decide what counts as silence?

Accepted Answer

It measures the level in 10 millisecond slices. Any stretch quieter than the Silence below level (-45 dB by default) that lasts longer than the Longer than setting (0.6 seconds by default) is treated as a pause.

Question 2

Does it cut the pauses out completely?

Accepted Answer

No, it shortens them. Each long pause is reduced to the length set in Keep a pause of, 0.25 seconds by default, so speech keeps natural breaks. Set it to 0 to close the gaps entirely.

Question 3

Nothing was removed. Why?

Accepted Answer

The background noise in the recording is probably louder than the threshold. Raise Silence below, for example from -45 to -35 dB, so the hiss or room noise counts as silence.

Question 4

It cut off quiet words. What should I change?

Accepted Answer

Lower Silence below so soft speech stays above the threshold, or raise Longer than so only longer pauses are shortened.

Question 5

Does it also trim silence at the start and end?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Long silence at the very start and end is shortened the same way as the pauses in between. To cut the ends at exact points instead, use the Audio Trimmer.

Question 6

How much shorter will my recording be?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how many pauses it has. After processing, the tool shows the old and new length, so you can see what was removed before downloading.

Question 7

Is my recording uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The silence is detected and removed in your browser, so private recordings stay on your device.
