Question 1

What is a MOV file?

Accepted Answer

MOV is Apple's QuickTime video format. iPhones, iPads, Mac screen recordings and many cameras save video as MOV. The sound inside is usually AAC, which this tool converts to MP3.

Question 2

How do I get the audio out of an iPhone video?

Accepted Answer

Open this page in Safari on the iPhone, tap the drop area, choose Photo Library and select the video. Convert it, then tap Download to save the MP3 to the Files app.

Question 3

Does it work with HEVC or ProRes videos?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Only the audio track is used, so the video codec doesn't matter. HEVC, H.264 and ProRes MOV files all work as long as the audio is AAC or PCM, which is what iPhones and most cameras record.

Question 4

Can I convert a Mac screen recording?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Screen recordings made with QuickTime Player or Shift-Command-5 are MOV files. If the recording includes microphone audio, it converts to MP3. A recording with no sound track can't be converted.

Question 5

Will the MP3 be smaller than the MOV?

Accepted Answer

Far smaller. iPhone video takes roughly 60 MB per minute at 1080p and much more at 4K, while a 192 kbps MP3 takes about 1.4 MB per minute. Free downloads cover videos up to 100 MB, about a minute and a half of 1080p iPhone video. Larger files are still converted, and the download needs Pro.

Question 6

Are my iPhone videos uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The MOV is read and converted in your browser, so personal videos never leave your phone or computer.
