What does each band change?

60 Hz is the deep bass and kick drum. 250 Hz is the body of the sound, and too much of it sounds muddy. 1 kHz is the core of voices and most instruments. 4 kHz is clarity and bite, and too much sounds harsh. 12 kHz is the air and sparkle at the top. Each band goes from -12 to +12 dB.

What do the presets do?

Bass lifts the 60 and 250 Hz bands. Vocal cuts the lows and lifts 1 and 4 kHz. Treble lifts 4 and 12 kHz. Loudness lifts both ends, like the loudness button on a stereo. Podcast cuts the low rumble and lifts the speech range. You can adjust any band after picking a preset.

How do I make voices in a recording clearer?

Try the Podcast preset. It cuts 60 Hz, where hum and handling noise sit, and lifts 1 and 4 kHz, where the consonants that make speech understandable are.

Why is the result quieter than the original?

Accepted Answer

To keep boosted bands from clipping, the output is turned down by half of the largest boost, for example 3 dB when the highest band is at +6 dB. Cutting bands instead of boosting avoids this.

Can the equalizer remove hiss or background noise?

Accepted Answer

Only partly. Lowering 12 kHz makes hiss quieter, but it also dulls cymbals and the s sounds in speech. The EQ changes broad frequency ranges and isn't a noise remover.
