Question 1

Is M4A better quality than MP3?

Accepted Answer

AAC, the codec in M4A, sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. Converting an existing MP3 doesn't bring back what MP3 removed, though, so the M4A will at best sound like the MP3 it came from.

Question 2

Does M4A save space over MP3?

Accepted Answer

At the same bitrate the files are the same size. The saving comes from AAC sounding about as good as MP3 at a lower bitrate, so you can turn a 192 kbps MP3 into a 128 kbps M4A with little audible change.

Question 3

Can I use the M4A as an iPhone ringtone?

Accepted Answer

Not directly. iPhone ringtones use the .m4r extension and must be 40 seconds or shorter. The MP3 to M4R Converter on this site makes one in a single step.

Question 4

Will the M4A play on Android and Windows?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Android, Windows 10 and 11, and all major browsers play M4A files. Very old players and some car stereos may still need MP3.

Question 5

Are my MP3s uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The MP3 is decoded and encoded as AAC in your browser, so your music stays on your device.
